Solihull Symphony Orchestra are joined by Ukrainian mezzo-soprano Anna Starushkevych on the afternoon of Saturday 29 April 2023 in a song cycle by Mahler and a riotous ballet by de Falla.
Conductor: Jon Malaxetxebarria
Mezzo Soprano: Anna Starushkevych
Smyth – The Wreckers Overture
Mahler – Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen
de Falla – The Three-Cornered Hat
“Wearing a vinók, a traditional flower crown with ribbons, Starushkevych explained that she was singing the aria […] as a message of strength, gratitude and hope to the people of her country. ‘After a dark and terrible night, the sun shines more brightly in the sky and fills the earth with joy.’ Starushkevych sang with radiance and terrific agility. I have never seen an entire audience leap to its feet so quickly to signal its support.”
